UTPA earned seven gold, nine silver and five bronze medals Friday through Sunday at the Great West Conference Championships in Humble.
The Broncs swept the podium honors in the men’s 800-meter run as senior Andy Lopez won the championship with a time of 1:53.03, junior Martin Casse came in second with a time of 1:53.16 and freshman PSJA Memorial alum Joshua Rosalez placed third with a time of 1:54.47.
Casse and Lopez also found themselves on the podium for the men’s 1,500-meter run, as Casse earned gold with a time of 4:05.49 and Lopez took silver with a time of 4:06.78.
The Broncs swept the gold medals in the 400-meter hurdles, with junior Dijan Johnson winning with a time of 52.40 on the men’s side and sophomore Mercedes Med alum Deandra Barroso winning on the women’s side with a time of 1:03.77.
Sophomore Jasmine Davison won gold in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 50.74 meters while junior PSJA North alum Vivian Espinoza grabbed silver with a career-best throw of 48.77 meters.
Sophomore Leocajuan Williams won the women’s triple jump with a distance of 11.34 meters.
Senior Judith Chumba won the gold medal in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:39.29.
Chumba also earned a silver medal in the women’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:43.53.
Sophomore Rebekah Rodriguez won the silver medal in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.31 while junior Edinburg North alum Luis Serrano took silver in the men’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:17.26
Junior Mission Veterans alum Alejandro Trevino took the bronze medal in the triple jump with a distance of 13.78 meters, while the women’s 4x100 meter-relay team of junior Donna alum Melissa Rodriguez, sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Kari Williams, freshman Brianne Davis and freshman Jasmine Brooks also earned bronze with a time of 48.07.
The Broncs earned bronze medals in both 4x400-meter relays as well. On the men’s side, the team of Johnson, junior Mission alum Edgar Moreno, freshman Ramon Neilly and senior Guillermo Martinez finished in a time of 3:20.52. On the women’s side, freshman Geneva Anderson, freshman Carolina Hinojosa, Melissa Rodriguez and Brooks finished in a time of 3:54.73.
Overall, both Broncs teams came in third out of six while both Utah Valley teams won their fifth-straight GWC Championship.
UTPA tied for eighth with a 909 (312, 300, 297) at the America Sky Conference Championships at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio last week
Senior Kevin Kirakossian led the Broncs by tying for 11th with a 219 (76, 71, 72). Fellow senior and PSJA Memorial alum Johnathan Sloss tied for 27th with a 226 (79, 74, 73).
