Roadrunners snap three-game skid

EDINBURG — The Edinburg Roadrunners continued their quest for the second seed in the United League playoffs alive with a 6-4 victory against the Amarillo Dillas Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The victory puts the Roadrunners one half game behind the Dillas for second place.

Miguel Martinez (9-4) allowed three runs while scattering four hits and striking out seven in seven innings.

Vincent Blue led off the bottom of the first with a walk and Hector Garanazuay followed with a single that allowed Blue to move to third putting runners on the corners. Sergio Guerrero then hit an RBI single off of Dillas starter Ralph Roberts (8-4) that allowed Blue to score giving the Roadrunners the early 1-0 lead.

Robert Matlock started the bottom of the second with a walk and moved to third after Bryon Smith singled to right center field. Blue followed with a two-out RBI single to right field allowing Matlock to score extending Edinburg’s lead 2-0.

In the top of the fifth a two-run double by Stantrel Smith allowed Trent Lockwood and Keanon Simon to score for Amarillo tying the game at two.

Carlos Hereaud hit a two-out double to right center field in the bottom of the fifth and then came into score on an RBI triple by Matlock. Smith followed with an RBI infield single allowing Matlock to touch home plate giving the Roadrunners the 4-2 advantage.

Amarillo (44-33) cut the lead to one in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Andrew Wong allowing Terrance McClain to score making it a 4-3 game.

The Roadrunners (44-34) scored another run in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases against the Dillas bullpen. A wild pitch from reliever Coby Mavroulis allowed Blue to score extending Edinburgs’ lead to 5-3.

The Dillas made it a one run game once again in the bottom of the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly from former Roadrunner Angel Reyes that allowed Smith to score making it a 5-4 game.

Eric Gonzalez led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left then stole second and with the throw going into center field he moved over to third. After a walk to Garanzuay, Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Gonzalez to score extending the Roadrunners lead to 6-4.

Kelly Casares worked a scoreless ninth for his 16th save of the season and giving Edinburg the 6-4 win.
