UTPA falls to Texas Southern

The University of Texas-Pan American women’s basketball program suffered a 65-58 setback to Texas Southern at Wednesday the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The loss brings the Lady Broncs to 0-2 on the season and improves the Tigers to 1-1 for the season.

UTPA entered the half leading 22-19 by three after a 3-point shot by Rachel Hester. By the half, Marah Guzman had scored half of her 12 total points. Guzman finished with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

UTPA struggled to hold onto the lead in the second as the half, which had 11 lead changes. The Lady Broncs could not pull ahead after tying the score at 51 with 4:22 left.

Along with Guzman, three other Lady Broncs finished in double-figures with Rose Esther Jean scoring 11 and withRachel Hester and Maria Ben Erlingsdottir scoring 10 apiece.

Jean added five rebounds and one assist, Hester seven assists and one rebound and Erlingsdottir seven rebounds and one assist.

Texas Southern’s top performer was NaDosha Strickland with 16 points and four rebounds. Two other Lady Tigers finished in double-figures with Inisha Daughtry scoring 15 and Jamine Payne with 14.
