Roadrunners earn split vs. WhiteWings

EDINBURG — The Roadrunners used a five-run third inning to defeat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 7-1 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium, earning the series split.

Gabriel Ortiz gave the WhiteWings (31-25) the early lead in the top of the second with an RBI single that scored Edgar Trejo making it 1-0.

The Roadrunners (24-33) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third after they batted around in the inning. Wellington Dotel led off with a double and then moved to second on a Derek Marshall infield single. R.J. Harris followed with an RBI single that allowed Dotel to score. With two outs and the bases loaded, Osiel Flores hit a bases clearing three-run double down the third base line. Robert Matlock then followed with an RBI single that drove in Flores from second giving Edinburg the 5-1 lead.

Jorge Quintero (4-6) retired nine batters in a row between the fourth and seventh innings while allowing one run in seven innings pitched earning his fourth win of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gabe Memmert hit an RBI double down the right field line that allowed C.J. Beatty to score from first. Flores followed with an RBI double to left field that drove in Memmert pushing the Roadrunners lead 7-1.

Tim Haines and Julio Castro combined for a scoreless eighth and ninth innings giving Edinburg the 7-1 victory.

The Roadrunners have Sunday and Monday off before the San Angelo Colts invaded Edinburg Baseball Stadium Tuesday night.
