The Navy Midshipmen men’s basketball team suspended J.J. Avila indefinitely last week.

Avila, a former McAllen High standout, had been leading Navy in scoring (15.9 points) and on the boards (7.9 rebounds) and was the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year last season. He had started in 21 games.

Last Friday, The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., reported that Avila was suspended for “an undisclosed violation of the Naval Academy rules.”

Midshipmen coach Ed DeChellis confirmed to the paper that Avila had been suspended but could not provide specifics. DeChellis also told the paper that he did not expect Avila to be back this season.
