McALLEN - Saul Jonathan Gutierrez of Saltillo, Mexico, prevailed over Guadalupe de Leon of Mission on an eight-round split decision in the main event of Friday's Fists of Fury Adrenaline show at Hidalgo's Dodge Arena.
The judges scored the featherweight matchup 77-75, 77-75, 75-77 for Gutierrez (8-16-3, two knockouts) over de Leon (7-9, four KOs), the local favorite.
"It was a war," Fists of Fury matchmaker Anthony Cavazos said. "The fight went back and forth, and it was a great bout. Nothing's official, but the fight was so close, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a rematch."
The six-round co-main event matching bantamweights was close as well as Gabriel Rangel (6-6-4, two KOs) of Veracruz, Mexico, fought to a draw against Joseph Rios (6-4-1, two KOs) of San Antonio.
There were six bouts on the card with an announced attendance of 2,700, Cavazos said.
On the undercard, Juan Lucio (4-0-1, two KOs) of Pharr captured a six-round split decision over Antonio Gamez (3-2, one KO) of Laredo, while Alberto Feliciano (2-0-1) of Puerto Rico won a four-round unanimous decision over Roberto Perez (2-5) of Matamoros.
In a rematch of female fighters, Maria Salinas (4-0-1, two KOs) of Pharr knocked out Valeria Garza (0-2) of Brownsville in the second round. Also, Richard Flores (2-8) of Edinburg secured a second-round technical knockout victory over Pedro Silva (2-13-1) of Rio Hondo.
