UTPA women defeat Houston Baptist
HOUSTON – The UTPA Broncs women’s basketball team went on a 17-0 run during the second half to come from behind to beat the Houston Baptist University Huskies 55-41 on Saturday at Sharp Gym.
The Huskies (1-18, 0-3 GWC) led 32-27 six minutes into the second half, but that’s when the Broncs (9-12, 2-1 GWC) started their 17-0 run. Donna Jackson hit 3 straight baskets, Johnondra Patterson converted a three-point play, Erin Lewis hit a jumper, Adanna Opara hit back-to-back baskets and then Patterson hit a jumper to cap the run with the Broncs leading 44-32 at the 9:16 mark.
Jackson led all scorers with 18 points on 9-of-17 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Patterson scored a career-high 13 points on a career-best 5-of-8 shooting, to go with a career-high seven rebounds and a career-high four steals. Opara scored nine points with a game-high 11 rebounds and Keandra Goodson scored four points with nine rebounds.
The Broncs out-rebounded the Huskies 55-45 while out-shooting them .338 (24-for-71) to .226 (12-53).
Jackson hit a pair of jumpers and Opara sunk a lay-up, on an assist by Jackson, as the Broncs took an early 6-2 lead.
The Huskies took the lead at 11-8 on a 3-pointer by Brittany Barton, but Goodson and Patterson hit back-to-back baskets to put the Broncs back on top.
The Broncs led 17-13 on a Jackson basket with 5:49 left in the first half, but the Huskies closed the half on an 8-2 run to go ahead 21-19.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Tayler Jefferson, who scored 10 points.
The Broncs return to action on Thursday at 8:05 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley University.
