Dorados come up short against Talons
Comments 0 | Recommend 0TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa Talons continued their bid for an undefeated season on Saturday night as ADT Defensive Player of the Game Delenell Reid intercepted a Travis Cole pass with 26 seconds remaining to seal a 45-40 win over the Rio Grande Valley Dorados.
The victory improves Tulsa to 7-0.
Cole completed 20-of-37 passes for 203 yards with three interceptions and four touchdowns for RGV (2-4).
The Talons got on the board first as QB Justin Allgood completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Allen at the 11:53 mark in the first quarter. The teams traded touchdowns throughout the first with the Talons leading 14-13 due to a missed extra point by Dorados kicker Brian Hazelwood.
The Dorados got the scoring going in the second on a 33 yard touchdown reception by Eddie Jackson to make the score 20-14 in favor of the visitors. The Talons were held in check for much of the quarter as Allgood struggled to find open receivers and was forced into throwing two interceptions. Despite Allgood's uncharacteristic miscues the Talons scored 10 points in the final minute of the half on a 3 YD touchdown run by Allgood and a 24 yard field goal by Luke Phillips with 3 seconds remaining to give the Talons a 24-20 lead.
Both offenses came out cold to start the second half combining for only 106 yards of total offense and 5 first downs. The only score of the quarter came on a 24-yard reception by the Talons' Jeff Hughley with 1:15 left in the quarter to give the Talons a 31-20 advantage.
The Dorados cut the deficit to four on an Anthony Chambers 13-yard TD reception with 11:55 left in the game. Kellen Allen caught his second touchdown pass of the game to put the Talons on top 38-27 with 4:40 remaining. The Dorados would not go out without a fight, scoring two touchdowns in the final 1:08 and recovering an onside kick with 35 seconds remaining before Reid's interception and two Justin Allgood kneel downs brought the game to an end.
