EDINBURG - Nick Bourn is batting .300 for the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team and has a story from his time on the diamond.
Two years ago, Bourn was with San Antonio Warren in a playoff game against Corpus Christi King, a match tied at 10 in the 11th inning. He hit a double and went to third on a single.
Bourn's coach, Scott Pederson, a former UTPA player, had a sign to steal - the Texas Longhorns' "Hook-em, Horns" salute.
"He held up two fingers warning us that runners were on first and third," Bourn said. "So the other runner took off, thinking it was a steal sign, not runners on first and third.
"I waited 'til they threw for a rundown play and slid home around the catcher with the winning run. Coach said, ‘Well, at least it worked,' to the runner, Mario Hildebrand."
Bourn, a sophomore, plays in the outfield and ranks fifth in slugging percentage and third in sacrifice flies.
"Coach Pederson recommended I go to Pan American," Bourn said.
Bourn is majoring in criminal justice and plans to be a federal marshal.
