Blackwell dominates Roadrunners
HARLINGEN — Eric Blackwell held the Edinburg Roadrunners without a hit until there were two outs in the fourth to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to a 3-2 victory on Saturday at Harlingen Field.
Blackwell (3-2) walked the first batter he faced, but a double play allowed him to face the minimum through four and two-thirds innings when Welington Dotel singled to break-up the no-hitter. Blackwell recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
The Roadrunners (20-24) put runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth, but Gabe Memmert flied out to end the threat.
Osiel Flores drew a leadoff walk and Stantrel Smith singled. Dotel hit a deep fly ball to advance the runners and knock out Blackwell. R.J. Harris followed with a sacrifice fly to bring the Roadrunners within 2-1.
Blackwell struck out 10 while allowing three hits and three walks in six and one-third innings.
Aaron Guerra (4-5) retired nine of the first 10 WhiteWings (23-20) he faced. In the fourth, however, Antonio DeJesus led off with a single and David Peralta hit an RBI-triple. A wild pitch scored Peralta making it 2-0.
That was it until the bottom of the seventh, when Gabriel Ortiz reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Francisco Santana to knock out Guerra with the score 3-1 WhiteWings.
