MISSION - Forward Travis Banga is officially the first member of the 2008-2009 Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.

Banga, who scored 23 goals, added 38 assists and was the Bees' lone All-Star last season, signed his contract at a watch party for Game 3 of the Western Conference finals between the Stars and Red Wings. The 28-year-old forward will also serve as the team's player-assistant coach and help Bees coach Paul Fixter with recruiting and other duties.

"Obviously, I knew I wanted to come back at the end of the season. We've got a lot that has to happen here next year and I look forward to being a part of that and turning the team around," Banga said. "When they approached me last week or a couple weeks ago about (being a player-assistant), I was just honored. It's a huge honor. David (Lemanowicz) did a great job last year. I have to try to fill his shoes and I'm looking forward to a bit of an expanded role.

Banga replaces Lemanowicz as the team's player-assistant. The veteran goalie is now an RGV team ambassador.
