Report: Avila resigns from Navy
The Capital in Annapolis, Md. reported Wednesday that J.J. Avila has resigned from the Naval Academy and was expected to return to Texas. The sophomore, who was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year last season and a former McAllen High standout, was suspended from the team last week because he violated academy rules. A Capital source said that Avila’s suspension has to do with his academics. Before his suspension, Avila had been leading Navy in scoring (15.9 points) and on the boards (7.9 rebounds) and started in 21 games.
