McALLEN — Miguel Del Angel Jr. began play with a birdie and led with two-time champion Ron Kilby at the end of the first round of the championship flight of the two-day 2007 IBC McAllen Amateur Golf Tournament at Palm View Golf Course.

Del Angel, who was last year’s runner-up, carded six birdies during the round. He recorded birdies on hole Nos. 1 and 7 — the longest hole of the tournament at 577 yards — and bogeyed the sixth and ninth holes for an even-par front nine.

He made a run on the back nine, bookending a four-birdie effort with birdies on the 10th and 18th holes and bogeying Nos. 16 and 17 on his way to 2 under par.

“I just wanted to stay in position and not shoot myself in the foot,” Del Angel said. “I just wanted to give myself a chance for (today). It all comes down to making putts. Whoever makes the putts (today) will probably be our champion.”

Kilby, who won in 2003 and 2005, was 1 over on the front nine after two bogies and a birdie on No. 4, but he birdied No. 10 and the last two holes for his 2 under.

“I feel like I played a really solid round of golf,” he said. “I hit a lot of fairways and greens, and controlled my distances really well going into the greens, because with the pins you had to try to stay below the hole all day. You couldn’t get above the hole, and I felt like I controlled my distances all day with all the greens.

“Ultimately, I want to get my third ring. I think it would be a special win to win for the third time.”

Kyle Marburger, the 2006 champion, and Ross Ledesma the 2004 champion, rounded out the top four. Marburger struggled early, taking bogey on the second, fourth and fifth holes with a birdie on No. 3 and standing at 2 over after nine. But he came back with birdies on Nos. 12 and 17 for a 72.

“The greens were so treacherous that I just got off to a slow start with a couple of bogies in the first four and five holes,” Marburger said. “I made a couple of birdies on the back side to get even, so I got behind just a little bit on the day right of the gate. (Today) I’m going to try to hit fairways and greens and make a few putts. That is what it really comes down to.”

Ledesma probably was the most consistent player of the four, playing solid golf through the first eight holes. He posted a bogey on No. 9 to sit at 1 over, but came back with birdies on No. 13 and 18 to tie Marburger for second at even par.

The tournament’s final round is today. The only golfer in the top 4 without a championship said today’s round will mean a little more.

“After being out competition for so long, you get used to playing at a certain level and it’s fun to be in that position again,” Del Angel said. “You get your juices flowing and your mind thinking the right way. It is a really good feeling as a competitor golfer.”
