Caregiver remembers Alvarez

The Monitor

To the editor:

Travis Middle School in McAllen ... the hub of the universe ... I met Victor Alvarez there — student, artist, computer game geek and child with SMA.

Jump 10 years or so, and I was given the privilege of being a caregiver to Victor — philosopher, historian, math geek, computer whiz and true artist. A special soul, seemingly trapped in a body that worked with many limits, but it didn’t stop him from championing the basic human rights of all people, and being the voice for those people — he had contacts all over the world, and gave sound advice for such a young man. Filled with wisdom, he was. Victor loved college — wanted to be the college professor that was a god-like entity, wanted to go for law school, wanted to own a computer gaming company ... full of ideas! He hated science, though, but had to take a course — chose astronomy. Victor’s spirit joined the meteors in the sky Aug. 17. His soul left the fragile body. He is strong, handsome and laughing ... with us, not at us. God speed, Victor Alvarez.
