Conserving electricity, water saves money

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

"Flip the Switch, Stop the Drip" is a dual slogan for an educational event on conserving electricity and water. The event is free and open to the public, and will be 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 6, at South Texas College Mid Valley Campus, 400 N. Border in Weslaco.

Activities will be at the North Academic Building G, Lecture Hall No. 191.

The event will give families tips to "live green" and cut household expenses at the same time. The first 100 adults will receive a free kit containing a water-saving shower head and garden hose nozzle and brochures to help families reduce electricity and water use in both the home and in the yard.

Exhibits and booths will demonstrate water-saving principles. There will be a native plant sale for those who want to use less water in their landscaping. There will also be door prizes and a drawing for rain barrels, which can be used to collect rain water.

The event is being funded by the Texas Water Resources Institute and is being co-sponsored by Texas AgriLife Extension Service, and the Biology Club at STC.

For more information, contact the Texas AgriLife Extension Service office at: Hidalgo County, 383-1026; Starr County, 487-2306; Cameron County, 361-8236.

Nora N. Garza is a County Extension Agent with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Hidalgo County, a part of the Texas A&M System. She can be reached at n-garza@tamu.edu.

It is exactly what is needed.
It is a step in the right direction.
It doesn't do enough.
I don't think it's a good idea at all.
