Mexican soldiers seized more than 11 tons of pot during various operations Wednesday in Tamaulipas.

Soldiers found 833 packages of marijuana on an island near the banks of the Rio Grande in Ciudad Mier, according to a news release from SEDENA, Mexico’s ministry of defense.

Soldiers in Miguel Aleman also found marijuana packages near the banks of the river after they followed a strong odor of pot, officials said. There they found 76 packages that weighed over 1,500 pounds.

A similar seizure occurred in Matamoros, where soldiers found two abandoned vehicles with seven packages of pot and three rifles near a dirt road along the river. Soldiers also found three magazines and 300 cartridges of various calibers.

Soldiers turned over the drugs and all other seized items to the proper authorities, officials said.
