In the event of a hurricane, shelters may or may not be available
Comments 0 | Recommend 0• Shelters will not likely open in the event of a category 3 or higher hurricane. For those big storms, evacuation is STRONGLY recommended.
• If shelters do open, tune in to local radio and news media, including www.themonitor.com, to find out where those facilities will be and when to go.
• If planning on seeking a spot in a shelter, make sure to bring at least three days worth of the following: clothing, bedding, medication, food for infants or anyone with special dietary needs, an extra pair of glasses, entertainment for children (and adults for that matter). Keep in mind there will be limited space in shelters.
• For health and safety reasons, pets are not allowed in shelters. Make arrangements for pets in advance
• Weapons, alcohol and drugs are not allowed in shelters.
• Keep an extra pair of work clothes (jeans, long sleeve shirts, sturdy, close-toed shoes) in your car for after the storm. Clean-up will be that much less fun in shorts and sandals.
