Student fires shot at Los Fresnos school
LOS FRESNOS - Parents and police surrounded a middle school Tuesday after a young student fired a gun on campus this morning.
Cameron County sheriffs officials say a 14-year old student at Liberty Middle School in Los Fresnos took a loaded gun to school this morning.
They say he entered the boys' bathroom and fired at least three rounds. No one was hurt. Investigators say the boy then stayed in the bathroom.
The Cameron County sheriff's department SWAT team was called to the school. SWAT members entered the bathroom and convinced the teenager to give up the gun, officials said.
All of the students at Liberty Middle School were moved from the school and taken to Laureles Elementary, which is located next door.
Hundreds of parents arrived at the elementary school to take their children home.
The schools are located at FM 2893 and FM 803 in the small community of Laureles just north of Los Fresnos.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Border Patrol agents, the Cameron County sheriff's department and other law enforcement agencies are still at the scene.
The teenager is in custody of the Cameron County sheriff's department. Investigators say the teen may have been distraught because he recently broke up with his girlfriend.
