RIO GRANDE CITY — Police arrested 13 alleged drag racers after they allegedly led officers on a 15-mile pursuit Tuesday night.

Rio Grande City police received a tip regarding the races at the Starr County airport about 10:40 p.m., Chief Dutch Piper said.

When officers arrived, the racers got into their vehicles and tried to flee by heading north on Farm-to-Market Road 3167, he said.

Police, along with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Starr County sheriff's deputies, however, set up a road block just south of Farm-to-Market Road 649, cutting off any attempts at fleeing.

Officers arrested 13 men between the ages of 18 and 25, Piper said. They are believed to be from the Mission and Rio Grande City area.

A judge expected to charge them with evading arrest, a state jail felony. Authorities did not release further information.
