GOP primary for U.S. House seats too close to call

A computer glitch in Hidalgo County election machines rendered the GOP primary races for two congressional seats too incomplete to call late Tuesday night.

In U.S. House District 28, Mission businessman Daniel Chavez was losing to Seguin small-business owner Bryan Underwood.

The two are facing off for the opportunity to challenge U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, who did not have an opponent in his party’s primary.

In the Republican primary for U.S. House District 15, 73-year-old Paul Haring led the race over rivals Eddie Zamora, of McAllen, and Mission resident Daniel Garza.

Late Tuesday the races hinged on results from Cameron and Hidalgo counties. The numbers were likely to change substantially once the ballots from Hidalgo County — home to Chavez, Zamora and Garza — were counted.

In Hidalgo County, the Republican results had been delayed by a computer glitch that forced election workers to tally the results by hand.
