Participants sought in low-dosage aspirin study

HARLINGEN — The Regional Academic Health Center is looking for participants in a study to determine the possible benefits of aspirin.

The study is being conducted by the school of medicine of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.

The RAHC is a campus of the UT Health Science Center San Antonio.

The RAHC is seeking participants over the age of 65 and of an ethnic minority, including Hispanics.

The “Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly” study will determine whether the potential benefits of low-dose aspirin outweigh the risks for people ages 65 and older.

The study began in 2010 and currently has 100 subjects enrolled in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.

“We are looking for at least another 80 healthy subjects in South Texas and are concentrating our efforts solely on ethnic minorities,” Dr. Sara Espinoza, a geriatrician and ASPREE’s lead investigator, said.

Espinoza is a professor of geriatrics in the school of medicine and is an investigator with the Center for Healthy Aging, according to a recent UT Health Science Center San Antonio release.

Participants are randomly assigned to either a treatment group taking aspirin or a control group taking an inactive placebo and are not notified of their assignment, according to the release.

To learn more about the study visit www.aspree.org or call (877) 524-3265. ASPREE is being conducted in clinics and universities in 11 states, including Texas.
