Doctors Hospital projects nearing completion

The new facilities for women should be ready by fall.

EDINBURG — The latest Doctors Hospital at Renaissance expansion is almost complete.

The doctor-owned and -managed hospital began building a women’s hospital, radiation/oncology center, behavioral health center and administration building last year as part of its ongoing plans to provide more services to the community. The hospital has undergone about 10 expansion projects since it opened in 1997.

Alonzo Cantu, the developer in charge of the latest expansion and a member of the hospital’s board of directors, said despite some rain, the projects are on schedule and everything should be completed in the fall.

The four-story, medical office building is finished and already has staff members working there. Meanwhile, the 50,000-square-foot radiation/oncology center is slated to open June 11 and will feature 30 infusion treatment stations and 20 examination rooms, as well as state-of-the-art imaging services.

The 200,000-square-foot women’s hospital — which includes 48 post-partum beds, 55 neonatal beds, seven Cesarean section operating rooms and 24 gynecological operating rooms — is expected to be completed by September.

Cantu said more neonatal beds were added because of the high volume of births in this area. The hospital anticipates delivering 600 to 800 babies a month, he said.

The 80-bed behavioral health hospital should be finished by mid-November and will provide inpatient and outpatient psychiatric programs for adults and children.

Marissa Castañeda, spokeswoman and interim chief operating officer for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, said the hospital has received many calls from members of the community asking about the new medical facilities, especially from women interested in birthing their children at the women’s hospital.

Doctors Hospital plans to offer tours of the new facilities to the community once they’re open, she said.

The hospital already has hired staff for the oncology center and plans to begin hiring for the women’s hospital this month, Castañeda said.

“We’re very optimistic, very excited about the progress,” she said.
