Woman ejected, killed in overnight wreck

DONNA -- A fatal overnight wreck near Donna left one woman dead and two others seriously injured, state troopers said.

The collision occurred near the intersection of North Val Verde and El Dora roads, when the driver of a Ford Taurus clipped a Mazda attempting to turn from Val Verde’s northbound lanes.

The Mazda burst into flames after the Taurus hit it from behind, troopers said. The collision ejected the Mazda’s driver and a female passenger, who died at the scene.

Emergency responders rushed the Mazda driver to McAllen Medical Center where he remains in serious condition. A family of five riding in the Taurus was also hospitalized. However, all but one member of that group were treated and quickly released.

It remains unclear whether alcohol or speed played a factor in the wreck.
