Authorities quietly detain girlfriend of alleged mastermind in mass-graves case

McALLEN — Mexican authorities quietly detained a woman identified as the girlfriend of the alleged mastermind behind the killings and mass graves in San Fernando, Tamps.

She has been in custody since her mother turned her in to the Mexican Navy last week, according to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office — known as the PGR.

Saray Fabiola “La Muñeca” Diaz Arroyo was detained after Mexican authorities touted the arrest of her boyfriend, Omar “Comandante Kilo” Estrada del la Mora.

Both Estrada and Diaz are in custody and have been arraigned in connection with the slayings of the more than 183 people whose bodies were found in pits in the San Fernando area, some 80 miles south of Brownsville.

The bodies of the victims — many believed to be bus passengers kidnapped by the Zetas drug cartel — have turned up since early April in at least 43 mass graves.

Unlike the arrests of most of the 74 individuals in connection with the case, the arrest of Diaz was not announced publicly. According to documents released by the PGR, her name just went from being on the wanted list to being on the list of those arraigned, alongside Estrada.

Details of the arrest weren’t available, but according to information released by the PGR, Diaz’s mother turned her in, saying that’s what her daughter came to want after realizing all the attention the case was garnering.

In various news releases, the PGR was offering 5 million pesos, or approximately $450,000, for information leading to her capture. The reward for Diaz has not been claimed.
