About 70 high school seniors attended a Rio Grande Valley Boot Camp on Wednesday at the University of Texas at Brownsville.
San Benito High School students Hilary Alvarado and Edgar Guerrero attended the boot camp to get ahead in the college planning stages. Along the way they met Jeneka Castillo from Economedes High School in Edinburg. The three became friends and bonded during the boot camp.
Guerrero attended the boot camp to inform himself about various other colleges there are throughout the state and what they have to offer.
“I know what I want to study and what I want to major in, but I don’t know the facilities or activities that different colleges have,” Guerrero said. “I learned about the financial aid and stuff like that. Like there is money out there that we have and if we have to like inform ourselves to get those opportunities.”
In partnership with Colleges Connecting with Schools, UTB hosted the boot camp to inform future students of what they need when applying to college.
“The purpose of the boot camp is to bring all (high school) seniors coming into the university to have a wide scope of what is needed as far as the admissions process, testing, all the criteria needed to get enrolled into college,” UTB Enrollment Specialist Normalinda Vera said.
The next RGV College Boots Camps will be July 15 at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen and July 17 at UT-Pan American in Edinburg.
