EDINBURG — A 39-year-old man died after he barricaded himself inside a home and shot at cops during a three-hour standoff with police, authorities said.

Jose Graciano Lopez, of Edinburg, was pronounced dead by Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Homer Jasso at 7:21 p.m. after he died inside a home on the 4000 block of Lopez Drive, Jasso said.

Edinburg police spokesman Lt. Oscar Treviño said Lopez had died as a result of an officer-involved shooting about 6:45 p.m. Authorities did not release any other details surrounding his death Tuesday night.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call about 3:35 p.m. from a neighbor who heard screaming coming from inside the house, department spokesman J.P. Rodriguez said.

Authorities believed that the man was in a physical fight with his wife, which left his 13-year-old daughter injured. The daughter was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries while the wife was able to escape the home safely, Treviño said.

Investigators said the man had locked himself in his bedroom with a rifle and threatened to kill himself, Treviño said.

The Texas Rangers took over the investigation after Lopez’s death and are investigating the officer-involved shooting, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Johnny Hernandez.
