A Weslaco police officer has resigned after he was formally charged with driving while intoxicated.
Weslaco police arrested Officer Elias Gomez on Saturday under suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Police refused to provide further details of Gomez’s arrest — including location, reason for the traffic stop, possible blood-alcohol content or whether the officer even submitted to a Breathalyzer test — as of press time Tuesday.
But Weslaco police Chief Michael Kelley confirmed the 26-year-old police officer’s resignation.
Gomez was booked at the Hidalgo County Jail at 12:17 p.m. Saturday and was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond about two hours later, officials said.
