EDINBURG — A Pharr man will spend 11 years in prison in connection with a drunken wreck that severely injured a teenage girl.
As a result of the Nov. 27, 2011, crash, every bone in the face of 14-year-old Aziris Rodriguez was shattered, records show.
On Monday morning, 92nd state District Judge Ricardo Rodriguez sentenced Melvin Alejandro Castillo to the prison term after he had been convicted of intoxication assault in a jury trial last week.
Castillo was driving white 2000 Chevrolet Impala along 281 and struck from behind a 2006 Chevrolet Impala in which Aziris and other members of the Rodriguez family were riding, a police report shows. The impact launched the Rodriguez vehicle across the lanes into the median. Castillo fled the scene and was later determined to be under the influence.
