McALLEN – A young man was killed after a fall onto Expressway 83 from the Second Street overpass Monday evening, stunning drivers and blocking westbound expressway lanes for more than an hour.

Witnesses at the scene were shaken as they described what happened to investigators.

“I just saw the body falling – or something falling. I didn’t know it was a body,” one woman told authorities.

McAllen police spokesman Lt. Joel Morales said the police were investigating the event as a possible suicide.

The 26-year-old man dropped over the overpass about 7 p.m. and crashed onto the expressway, where a car hit him, Morales said. Police are still searching for the driver of that vehicle, who fled the scene. A couple of other nearby cars stopped to call 9-1-1.

Morales said he was not aware of any similar incidents on that overpass. He emphasized that the investigation was ongoing and that the man was not being named until his family could be contacted.

“We’re trying to verify the preliminary information we have that he may have jumped off the bridge,” Morales said.
