Brownsville police are trying to determine the identity of a woman found floating in the Rio Grande underneath the Gateway International Bridge Monday morning.

The woman is believed to be in her 50s. She is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds and has gray hair. She was wearing a pink colored nightgown with flowers on it. The woman had stitches on her arm that appeared to have come from dialysis, police said.

There are no visible signs of foul play, said police spokesman Eddie Garcia. An autopsy has been ordered.

The unidentified woman had an orange pouch sewn into her clothing. A plastic bag with a wooden stool inside it was found near her body.

Authorities believe the woman is a Mexican national. She had been seen near the UETA duty-frees store in Brownsville and also a church near 12th Street in Matamoros, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on the woman’s identity to contact Brownsville police at (956) 548-7000 or (956) 546-8477.
