EDINBURG — The Monitor visited the University of Texas-Pan American on Monday to see how students felt about the five names the UT System floated for the new university — UT for the Americas (UTA), UT Las Americas (UTLA), UT International (UTI), UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and UT South (UTS).

Here’s what some of the students had to say:

>> Aaron Barreiro, UTPA student body president, who said that UT South “is nice” and that “UT International” and “UT for the Americas” sound “a little, almost corporate”: “Even if it was just for a week, it’d be really nice to see that option (a student vote) available, (for) both universities.”

>> Anthony Paulson, a junior from Roma, who favors UTRGV: “I don’t think the school is as international as (UT International) makes it sound.”

>> Brenda Cuevas, a junior from Pharr, who favors UT International: “I feel like that one’s more into a broader thing.”

>> Mindi Moreno, a junior from Angleton: “I hate the first two” — UT for the Americas and UT Las Americas. “We’re not going to school with people from South America.”

>> Eloy Gonzalez, a senior from San Benito, who favors UTRGV: UT-Pan American “would fit just right” if it were an option. UT South “doesn’t express … who we are.”

>> Odette Marin, a freshman from Dallas, who favors UT International: “We’re international; there’s a lot of different cultures.”

>> Cesar Fuenlabrada, a freshman from Torreon in the Mexican state of Coahuila, who chooses UT International: “It shows that Pan Am is actually an international school.”
