BROWNSVILLE — A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer is to spend nine years in prison for accepting bribes and smuggling immigrants.

On Thursday morning, Juan Carlos Guerrero went before U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen who handed down a five-year sentence for conspiracy to bribe a public official, nine years in prison for bribery, and nine years for encouraging illegal entry into the U.S. The sentences were set to run concurrently.

Guerrero worked the midnight shift from October 2008 to January 2011, conducting vehicle inspections at the Hidalgo, Pharr and Anzalduas international bridges, through which his girlfriend Claudia Flores and co-defendants Maribel Diana Rivera and Rodolfo Caballero Rojas transported up to 100 individuals.

On Thursday morning, the rest of the group went before Hanen for sentencing.

Flores was sentenced to five years in prison, Rivera was sentenced to 30 months in prison and Rojas was sentenced to two years in prison.
