The University of Texas-Pan American issued this news release Wednesday, April 11, 2012:
The University of Texas-Pan American has just learned of a confirmed case of viral meningitis. The student with the illness lives off campus and is recovering at home under the care of a personal physician. There have been no other reported cases of meningitis, according to University officials.
Viral meningitis is generally less severe than bacterial meningitis and resolves without specific treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The University has notified students, faculty and staff and will hold an informational session to answer their questions about the illness and how to protect themselves.
