Shelters named; more expected after storm

McALLEN - A few shelter locations have already been announced.

More are expected to be named as Hurricane Dolly makes landfall Wednesday morning.

Shelters the Hidalgo County Emergency Management Department identified Tuesday were:

* McAllen High School, 2021 La Vista, McAllen

* PSJA North High School, 600 E. Earling Road (Nolana extension), Pharr

* South Middle School, Freddy Gonzalez Drive near Closner Boulevard, Edinburg

* Garcia Elementary, FM 1015 and Santa Rosa Avenue, Edcouch-Elsa area

* Taylor Elementary, 900 N. Missouri, Mercedes

* Hanna High School, 2615 Price Road, Brownsville

* Porter High School, 3500 International Blvd., Brownsville (opens when Hanna reaches capacity)

* Harlingen High School South, 1701 Dixieland Road, Harlingen

* St. Cecilia Church, 606 W. Ocean Blvd., Los Fresnos. Pets must be in a pet carrier.

Residents are asked to bring their medications, bedding, food and water for their family for about three days.

While residents are not encouraged to rely on food at the shelters, meals are expected to be served if the storm continues through the night and into Wednesday, said McAllen Emergency Coordinator Kevin Pagan.

Pets will be permitted but are not encouraged. Residents with pets are asked to bring carriers.

Alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs and firearms are not permitted.
