NORTH OF ALAMO — Investigators with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office continue working to determine the circumstances behind the shooting death of Oscar Treviño.
On Monday morning, investigators arrived in the 1700 block of Verbena Street after receiving calls of a body in a temporarily vacant home, which was undergoing renovations. Investigators recovered the body of Treviño, 39, of Castroville. It appeared he’d been shot in the head and there were signs he had been beaten.
Autopsy results show the cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the back of the head, according to information released by the Sheriff’s Office.
The victim was reported as a convicted felon with arrests in various Texas cities and as having served time in both federal and state prisons, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The victim’s tattoos identify his affiliation with the Raza Unida prison gang, but family members told The Monitor that Treviño had turned his life around and was trying to stay away from criminal activity.
That could not be corroborated with the Sheriff’s Office, which is still working to determine whether Treviño was still involved in gang activity.
