4 Rio Grande Valley residents killed in rollover
Three Harlingen residents and a Weslaco woman were killed and three other people injured Friday afternoon in a one-vehicle rollover in Atascosa County south of San Antonio.
The accident occurred at 5:55 p.m. on Interstate 37, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Pronounced dead at the scene were driver Aaron Joseph Cruz, 21, of Harlingen; passengers Jonathan Cortez, 4, of Harlingen; Anieca Salazar, 13, of Harlingen; and Janette Ramirez, 28, of Weslaco.
According to the DPS report, of the four dead only the driver was wearing a seat belt.
Injured were Jesse Salazar, 11, of Harlingen; Jasmine Cantu, 9, of Harlingen; and Denise Cantu, 31, of Harlingen.
Jesse Salazar and Jasmine Cantu were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio with serious body injury, according to the report. Denise Cantu was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center with serious body injury.
No updates on their conditions were available as of Sunday night.
The vehicle carrying the seven occupants was traveling northbound on Interstate 37 in a 2002 Ford Explorer when the right rear tire separated and lost its tread, according to the DPS report.
The vehicle veered into the center median, crossed both southbound lanes and rolled, ejecting four of the seven occupants, the report stated.
According to the San Antonio Express-News website, Denise Cantu was mother of the two children killed in the wreck.
