Fire damages popular SPI eatery
Comments 0 | Recommend 0SOUTH PADRE ISLAND -- An early morning fire Thursday at Dirty Al's restaurant caused damage to the kitchen and roof area of the building.
No injuries were reported in connection with the blaze.
A small group of employees had arrived and were working inside the eatery at 33396 State Park Road 100, when a county park employee noticed smoke rising from the vents on the roof, alerted the workers inside and called the Fire Department.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.
"There's a lot of smoke damage, and water damage, too-but they got that fire under control in just minutes," said Burney Baskett, the new South Padre Island fire chief.
Johnny Cavazos, the Cameron County emergency manager, said electrical wiring in the attic crawl space may have shorted out and ignited the wood there, which was saturated with cooking grease.
"That's a very preliminary guess," he said. "We're going back (Friday). Our investigation is far from complete. Our guess could be way off the mark. We just don't know at this point."
No dollar estimates of the damage were available Thursday.
