Another Mexican candy recalled

AUSTIN - Another Mexican candy is being recalled due to elevated levels of lead that could cause health problems.

The Texas Department of State Health Services says Villa-Mex Imports of San Antonio is recalling Miguelito Azucar Salada Enchilada Aciduladaa.

The candy is a reddish powder in a clear cellophane packet with blue lettering.

DSHS determined in laboratory testing that the candy had lead levels from .16 to .29 parts per billion, significantly higher than the .1 part per billion that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers hazardous.

The net weight is marked as 1.7 ounces.

The label also reads: Elaborado Por: Fabrica de Dulces Miguelito, S.A. DE C.V. Totonacas No 293 Col. Ajusco Coyoacan, Mexico.

DSHS says consumers who have the recalled products should return them or throw them away.

Villa-Mex Imports last made a candy recall in December.

The company previously recalled Barrilito, a thick brown syrup sold in 3.3 ounce jars, and Tarritos, a reddish-brown paste packaged in 3.3 ounce glass jars with a handle and white plastic lids, because of concerns over lead levels.

Persons concerned about their lead intake, or the lead intake of their children, should call their doctor and request a blood test, the agency suggested.
