20-year-old charged after fatal Brownsville crash
BROWNSVILLE — A city employee was killed Sunday after a pickup truck crashed into the motorcycle he was driving.
Jorge Daniel Hurtado, a 31-year-old employee with the Parks and Recreations Department for more than five years, died instantly as a result of his injuries, police said.
Police arrested 20-year-old Andrew Barrera on Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Dockberry Road and Jaime Circle and later charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with the fatal wreck, said police spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Manrrique.
On Monday morning, Barrera was released after posting a $10,000 bond set by Municipal Judge John Williamson.
According to police records, the crash took place when Barrera was traveling east on Dockberry Road and came across a Chrysler PT Cruiser that had stopped in order to turn into Jaime Circle.
Barrera went around the Cruiser, without seeing Hurtado, who was traveling west on Dockberry on a 2008 blue Kawasaki Vulcan. Hurtado slammed into the pickup, police records show.
"Barrera told the accident investigators that he was heading to his girlfriend's house before going to work," Manrrique said. "He was charged with negligent homicide because this wasn’t an accident. This was a reckless action that resulted in the death of Hurtado."
Police are still waiting on the toxicology results of Barrera’s blood to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
