Indicted Donna school board president to keep position for now

DONNA — The Donna school board took no action at a special board meeting Tuesday to change the titles of some of its members.

The board quickly voted to move the agenda item “discussion and possible action on reorganization of board of trustees” from the superintendent’s report at the beginning of the meeting to executive session at the end.

The board’s lack of a decision means board president George Hernandez retains his title despite being charged with 11 counts of conspiracy and extortion in a federal indictment unsealed June 5 as part of the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo school district bribery scandal. Hernandez, who owns a roofing business, was indicted as a contractor and not in his role as a Donna school district official.

The Donna school board did approve one of three options Tuesday to reorganize the district’s administrative staff. The board did not name who was affected, because those individuals are expected to be sent letters today stating what their new employment status with the district is.

Meanwhile, the PSJA school board is scheduled to name an interim superintendent when it meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at PSJA High School. Superintendent Arturo Guajardo and board members Vangie Garcia-De Leon, Roy Rodriguez and Roy Navarro each received 22 counts of conspiracy and extortion when the federal government unsealed its indictment earlier this month.
