A San Carlos man was killed in an auto collision that also sent four others to area hospitals for treatment.

Juan Francisco Figueroa, 36, of San Carlos, died after a 1993 Lincoln he was traveling in was struck by a 1997 Ford LXE, Lt. Henry Betancourt of the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

Shortly before midnight Friday, the Lincoln was traveling westbound on Mile 17 Road North in rural Edinburg when it collided with the Ford that was traveling north on Terry Road.

The driver of the Lincoln, 17-year-old Martin Cuellar of San Carlos, was sent to McAllen Medical Center to be treated for lung and head trauma injuries.

The three people travelling in the Ford were sent to Edinburg Regional Medical Center to treat minor injuries, Betancourt said.

None of the people involved were wearing their seatbelts, Betancourt said.

Betancourt said investigators have not determined whether the drivers involved were under the influence of drugs.

It is exactly what is needed.
It is a step in the right direction.
It doesn't do enough.
I don't think it's a good idea at all.
