McCOOK | FATAL ROLLOVER
An Edinburg man was killed early Friday morning after he was thrown from his SUV as it repeatedly rolled over, authorities said.
Hugo Cesar Torres, 33, lost control of his Ford Explorer about 5:45 a.m. as he was eastbound on Farm-to-Market Road 495 and came around a bend, said Trooper Johnny Hernandez, a spokesman with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Torres was thrown from the vehicle and was dead by the time authorities arrived at the scene.
Authorities believe speed was a factor in the crash.
PHARR | CHICKEN CRASH
A woman lost control of her SUV and slammed into a Church's Chicken restaurant Friday morning.
The dining room of the fast-food restaurant at the corner of Business 83 and Cage Boulevard suffered extensive damage as the woman plowed into the building about 7 a.m., said Lt. Guadalupe Salinas, a spokesman for Pharr police.
Officers are still investigating the crash and aren't sure why the woman lost control of the vehicle, Salinas said. Police don't expect to file any criminal charges, however.
No one was in the restaurant during the crash and the woman was treated and released from McAllen Medical Center with minor injuries.
EDINBURG | HIT-AND-RUN
Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run crash that sent a cyclist to the hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police have not released the name of the man who was hit as he rode his bicycle along the side of University Drive in Edinburg. Ac-cording to witness accounts, a green, 1980s-model Chevrolet Blazer hit the man about 9 p.m. Thursday near "M" Road and University Drive, said Edinburg Assistant Police Chief Peter de la Garza.
The man, who is described as a Hispanic male in his early-tomid-30s, was taken to McAllen Medical Center. He was found carrying a Mexican border registration card, but police were unsure of his nationality.
HIDALGO | DRUGS
Federal authorities seized more than 50 pounds of marijuana at the Hidalgo- Reynosa International Bridge, officials announced Friday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found the drugs Wednesday evening in a 1995 Nissan Maxima, according to a statement the agency released. They arrested Juan Enrique Beltran, 27, of Reynosa, who was driving the vehicle.
Officers found 12 packages of marijuana while inspecting the vehicle's trunk, according to the statement. The drugs have an estimated street value of $42,000.
Beltran was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and awaits an appearance before a federal judge.
