BP agents find assault rifles near river

FRONTON �”� U.S. Border Patrol agents found two AK-47 assault rifles hidden in a grassy area near the Rio Grande Tuesday, according to a news release from the agency.

Agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station discovered the pair of highly trafficked weapons after responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area, officials said. Each rifle had one round of ammunition loaded in the chamber and 29 additional rounds in the magazine.

Both weapons and ammunition were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation, agents concluded.
