Area Texas Exes saying goodbye to future UT freshmen at celebration

McALLEN — The Texas Exes Hidalgo-Starr County Chapter will host a send-off celebration Monday, June 18 for recently admitted and deposit paid rising freshmen attending the University of Texas at Austin this fall.

The reception is at 6:30 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center at Ware Road and U.S. Expressway 83. Scheduled to speak are university President William Powers and representatives from the housing and financial aid departments. Area alumni will also attend.

The event is free. The registration deadline is Wednesday. For more information, e-mail marioruizjr@hotmail.com.

Hidalgo school district receives federal grant

HIDALGO — The Hidalgo school district recently received a $1.4 million five-year federal grant to attract more teachers.

The money is from the U.S. Department of Education’s Teacher Incentive Fund and was funneled through the University of Texas System.

The funds will be used starting in the 2008-2009 school and help provide financial incentives for Hidalgo teachers throughout the year.

Weslaco superintendent honored for job longevity

WESLACO — Weslaco schools Superintendent Richard Rivera recently received an award for his 40 years with the district.

He began his career in 1967 as a teacher and coach and later became an assistant principal, principal and has been superintendent for the past 11 years.
