Pole dancing used to be something reserved for gentleman's clubs.

There women would demonstrate erotic acrobatic skills as they spun around, dangled from and hoisted their bodies upon a metal pole. Now, pole dancing has become mainstream. More and more studios that teach ordinary women how to move their body around a pole, including Xotic Pole Fitness in Mission, are opening up around the country.

"This is a really great movement because it allows women to take ownership of their bodies," said Brianna del Castillo, studio manager of Sheila Kelley's S-Factor in Houston. "It provides a safe place for women to reconnect with themselves as sensual, sexual beings."

The movements in pole dancing are rounded and sensual, catering to a woman's body.

Women can "think into the movement, melt into the movement," del Castillo said. "I think it really requires women to go out of their comfort zone and come face to face with a lot of fears women have about their body image."

Pole dancing can also build self-esteem and confidence, said Adriana Cavazos, owner of Xotic Pole Fitness. Women walk out of a class "feeling sexy."

And they also walk out with a great workout.

"It really works your arms," she said. "You'll feel them burn."

The best part of pole fitness, though, is that anyone can do it.

"This movement is meant for every woman, whether you are in college, just had three children or are retired," del Castillo said. "We have doctors, homeworkers, students. Women who haven't worked out a day in their life and tri-athletes."
