SCENARIO 3: Your boyfriend cheats on you with your best friend.

The Monitor

What they did:

Shortly before Serena left for boarding school, she and Blair's boy-toy of the moment, Nate, had a drunken night of passion after a party. When this is revealed early in season 1, the girl's friendship falls apart (it doesn't stay that way), but Blair stays with Nate (this also doesn't stay this way).

What Jeanne Murphy, 16, would do:

Murphy, a junior at McAllen High School, said the core issue with both her friend and boyfriend would be trust, but she would give them both a second chance.

"He would have a lot to do before I could begin to trust him again," she said.

But Murphy added that she would "never be able to see her (the best friend) the same way again" and that the relationship with would be more strained than that with the boyfriend because "you've known your girlfriend longer."

"You've shared more things with the girlfriend than the boyfriend, in a non-lesbian way," she said with a laugh.

Another important factor, Murphy said, would be if the two people were intoxicated or not because "they wouldn't have known any better."

The lesson: Second chances come to those who were out of their right mind when the bad deed was done.
