NEW BARS: Vicio
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Vicio, Spanish for vice, will feature three distinct sections.
The first part will be an air conditioned, indoor lounge. Think Boiler Room but smaller. The second part will be partially outdoors, with a large dance floor and tunes to groove to. Think Dubai's outdoor section. And the third part will be a completely open air patio, with a stage for live music. Think Stubb's in Austin but smaller.
There's no dress code. Come in a suit or come in shorts, the owners say. It shouldn't matter at Vicio, because the three sections will make the place comfortable for any and all.
And the owners have the expertise to do it.
Scott Bowen, who's in his 40s, hails from Houston and he used to own a series of coffee shops. Johnny Martinez, an Edinburg native in his early 30s, has seen much success in the tax business.
Together they have collaborated to open Vicio. Bowen brings years of frequenting bars in north Texas. Martinez knows what works in the Valley.
And they have a secret weapon. Bowen says his bar will be the first to serve frozen martinis.
"Anybody can make a martini. But have you ever had a frozen martini? And think about our weather here..." he says.
Look for Vicio to debut before New Year's Eve or shortly after. It's nestled next to Flesh, a short walk from Boiler Room.
"You can't make everybody happy, but we sure are going to try," Bowen says.
Owner Scott Bowen on his bar's music selection, "The only thing we won't have is Tejano."
Owner Johnny Martinez on his bar's music selection, "We'll have every type of music, except country."
Vicio
204 S. 17th St.
Projected opening date: Before New Year's
Hours: 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday
Style: Indoor lounge, open air music venue and outdoor patio
Musical style: Eclectic, the owners say they welcome everything except country and tejano
Crowd: Eclectic like the music, the owners say they want anyone and everyone hanging out.
Formerly: A shoe store
Dress code: Not too strict. Casual
Recipe Dubai + Newman's - grill feeling
One year outlook: Too soon to tell. Vicio hasn't started major construction yet, making it tough to peg how successful the place will be. The idea is solid, one bar with three sections, mostly outdoors. But whether it lives or dies depends on the execution.
Typical patron: All ages, people who enjoy live music and drinking outdoors.
