FESTIVA CD REVIEW: The Young Maths - 'Thank You Goodnight We Are'
It doesn’t really matter who The Young Maths may sound like, who is in the band or which other bands they’ve shared a stage with. All that matters is the addictive music the local band creates.
The latest EP from local rockers The Young Maths is, sadly, a short four songs long. Those energetic tracks are almost worth the price of the disc though if you’re a fan of an aggressive funk bass line, a good beat and crazed vocals.
Though Thank You Goodnight We Are is clearly a dance album from a band that always makes you want to move your feet, the song “Gay Bars” seems to depart a bit from The Young Maths’ formula. The song is a bit slower and has a catchy chorus with harmonies.
If a song were to define The Young Maths, it would have to be “Sheets.” It’s also the track with the most radio play potential.
The combination of Robert Godinez’s vocals and the distortion effects on “The Science” blends well, though the distortion is a bit unnecessary for the indie rock band.
Hopefully the next album from The Young Maths will be a full-length CD with more tracks to show off the diversity that I know exists among these musicians. Because, really, you need more than 12 minutes to appreciate the band.
