Christian rock band Remedy Drive will headline a youth conference Friday, Aug. 6, at the First Baptist Church in McAllen.

The four brothers from Lincoln, Neb., have been performing since the late 1990s. Remedy Drive plays piano rock that has been heavily influenced by secular artists like Muse, Weezer, The Killers and U2.

Also scheduled for the conference are speakers Afshin Ziafat, Josh Tapia and Iris Blue.

Youth pastor Shannon McCoy said the event is open to all denominations, but organizers request that teens come with a church group with an adult leader.

Texan-born pop diva Paula DeAnda will turn it up Thursday, Aug. 12, for Rio VIP Nights, the summer concert series at Rodz in Edinburg.

DeAnda got her big break when she performed for 20,000 people at 2005’s Bayfest in Corpus Christi. After that, the singer had an opportunity to sing for Clive Davis, a record producer who has had a hand in the careers of artists like Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson. He signed DeAnda to a seven-album deal instantly in 2006.

Now is your chance to see her up close and personal at a concert with limited seats – VIP concertgoers will get to meet DeAnda and get her autograph.

As summer comes to a close, take advantage of the outdoor day camps being offered by the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. The first week, for children ages 9 to 12, features a variety of nature-related experiences at the refuge. Campers will learn about plants, animals, birds and will participate in games art projects and a final conservation project at the end of the week. For those ages 13 to 16, a separate camp is planned that will include kayaking, hiking, wildlife observation, fishing, archery and the day camp week will end with a conservation project.

Have you ever wanted to ask a dearly departed relative to keep it down with the haunting of your house late at night? Maybe you can if you learn how to get in touch with the dead using the Victorian method of tarot card reading. Kate Moore, who has been a tarot reader for 16 years, will conduct a workshop from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Brownsville Heritage Complex. Students will receive a tarot deck of their own and instructions from Moore on how to use it. The workshop is intended for adults 18 years and older. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required to attend.
