FESTIVA'S INFINITE PLAYLIST: Driving The Nails

The Monitor

Driving the Nails recorded "Days of Mourning" a few years back, intending it to be part of a forthcoming new album.

It was to be part of the Edinburg group's follow up to their 2004 debut album. Some things happened. Musicians left the band, and the sophomore album never came out. The song, however, ended up on a compilation put together by local music publication Magazine X. Lead singer and guitarist David Rodriguez, who wrote, produced and recorded the song, estimates only 1,000 were ever made.

Since then fans have begged for the song from Rodriguez, who's the only remaining member of the industrial band. Driving the Nails hosts "Days of Mourning" on its MySpace, but the song still needs to be mass distributed.

We were more than happy to add this heavy rock tune to our local music play list.

Rodriguez wrote this song after losing his grandmother two days after Christmas. Rodriguez calls it "arguably [my] most compelling and personal composition to date." And we agree.

What the Song Writer Says: I wanted to capture the feeling of great loss, deep sadness, and retrospect all at once. I wanted the song to take me to another place, to make me feel the void left behind. I make music to evoke emotion from my listener. Hopefully, they will respond to the subject matter and be moved by the music. Ultimately, it's ideal that our fans can identify and relate to the music. It is still the most difficult song to perform for me personally.....

......My thoughts on the song, Days of Mourning, are very positive, because although it was written during a very dark time in my life, it reflects feelings of sorrow but, at the same time, it also gives me hope, helped me heal, and makes me rejoice for all the blessings in my life. It is as much art as it is a therapeutic form of expression. The power of music makes all the difference in the world for me and hopefully, with an in depth look at this song, it will also have the same kind of impact on the people that listen to my music.

For fans of: Nine Inch Nails, Bush, Filter.

Lyrics:

Trying to find a little solace in me, through these days of mourning,

I guess, I'm stronger and weaker than I thought to be, and yet I find no peace here...

Until I see you again, in the realm of the dead.

Feeling torn and withered and I can't pretend, such hollow emptiness,

Overcome by this, thoughts are all paralyzed and I can't speak, and so I weep and remember you....

Death is just another doorway

Just another path to take

Just another dream to wake

No, I will not be afraid

Hold a place for me there

Because I no longer care......
